Through his brief monologue, she was impressed by the train of thought that was revealed. She was still evaluating her new commanding officer. She had heard about his service in the fleet and how he started on one side and ended up on the other. She contemplated how her life might have been different if she had switched sides or actually been on a ship on the other side, but circumstances were beyond anyone's control. But the end of the war was something that brought as many questions to rise as it seemed to answer. And open ended questions never sat well with Shrekt. She despised the lingering doubt that now seemed to hover around her like an endless cloud. It filled her thoughts and she longed for a day when things were black and white or perhaps more clear. This mission did nothing to ease her sense of dread that a single misstep could lead down a path that would end in disaster. Surely there would be those that would argue that the war was a mere aberration in the history of the Federation. That it was a simple internal matter. But the loss of life could not be dismissed so easily in Shrekt's mind, as it seemed for others. The Federation was once a beacon of light and hope to the galaxy, representing the highest ideals that were agreed upon by its member states. Now that light had been tarnished by recent events and Shrekt knew that Star Fleet, as the Federation's public face to the galaxy would need to work even harder to convince a cynical galaxy that the Federation's high ideals weren't just for show. It was as though the curtain had been pulled back to reveal some dark secret, that Shrekt knew deep down did not represent the true Federation. But to those from the outside, it would be difficult to discern the truth from the lies. Renewed contact with the Maltorians was a test not just for the ship and her crew, but for the Federation as a whole. It was a microcosm of what was occurring throughout the Federation as everyone struggled with the new reality. Everyone striving to return and exceed the legacy that has been built for hundreds of years. But all the while may have been damaged beyond repair. But such ponderings would do Shrekt no good. Stakes' words gave Shrekt a small ounce of hope that she would have to hold dear before it would evaporate into the ether. When Stakes finished, Shrekt said, "Very well Captain, I shall do my duty." With a small smile, she added, "As you command." He nodded in response, which Shrekt took for a dismissal and she took her leave. Doctor Nymes, didn't one of your hosts have an ambassadorial duty? If that is the case, Doctor, can you see me in my Ready Room? I think I pulled my neck muscle. =/\= Nymes' ears made a comparable movement to the very best of a pragmatic Vulcan, when he heard his summon's to the bridge. It was true, his first host Salvia Nezla had been a "federation" ambassador; but she had been an attaché of the Trill authority before they had become part of the larger federation. After the initial diplomatic wrangling, she had been part of numerous second contacts with various races, all the time as an example to what they could achieve in partnership. Nymes' memory was hazy on the details; the temporal incident had wiped away his "true" recollection, and left a muddled set of feelings, rather that reminisces. Having checked the file, he couldn't see if he had been part of the initial missions to Maltoria. It was possible, but Nymes just couldn’t remember. "On my way, sir." Nymes said, collecting - as was his habit - the medical kit on his way out of Sickbay. (USS Dennison - Bridge/Ready Room - CMO Nymes - 1901) "Sir, reporting as requested." (USS Dennison, Bridge Commander Trevan West 1902) "We will be ready, Director. Please allow us some time to make our preparations. We will contact you again when we are ready. I assume we can use the same frequency?" "We will know you are ready. We will contact you then," replied Malwer. =/\=Bridge, this is Chief Freeman. Whatever just happened up there, we lost eleven percent of our reserve power. Whatever it was, our energy systems are not compatible with it. We saw inertial dampers and structural integrity power consumption nearly jump off the scale. It’s settled down now, but we still have the reserve power loss to deal with." He checked the engine logs quickly, then spoke again, voicing his surmise. "Bridge, did someone tractor us? If so, you might want to rethink that. If it happens again we might have some real systems damage.=/\= West was already in his seat ready to reply, "Yes, we were tractored through some sort of interspatial rift. Minor damage on the Bridge and yes, it does seem like our power systems are not compatible. The Maltorians actually tractored us for that reason. Otherwise we would be a small expanding mass of atmosphere and spinning bits of debris right now. See what you can do to make the next passage a little less disturbing to our systems, and keep me updated on our reserve power and any other affected systems. West out." "Well, it looks like we may be here a while sir," Archibald nodded. "With no way out? Looks like we have no choice. But it saves us some difficult decisions. Ok, Mister West, away team. Who and why." Trevan thought about that a while ago, so he was quick to answer. "I would like Spero, Soma, Sanok, Porter, Bracken as my second and Atwood. Also I would like Lt. Alosar to join." replied Trevan who then explained his reasons. He wanted his CSO on the mission as her extensive research on this culture would prove valuable to him. Spero was his language expert and Trevan wanted her there in case of a malfunction with the translator. Soma and Sanok were no-brainers as they would require security. Porter was needed for his medical experience and Atwood being the Engineer he was, would be needed to study the Maltorian engineering techniques. Alosar would be Trevan's third on the mission and a possible great help when it came to dealing face to face with other races. Archibald regarded the OPS officer. "Mister Spero, do you think you can teach me the basics of Maltorian language? Like saying hi all, how nice to be here?" Trevan looked at the Captain, "You don't actually think I am going to let you go down there sir, do you?" (reply Stakes) Trevan shook his head, "No sir. Not until we can establish a dialogue and guarantee your safety. You know that," he said with a sly smile, "I wasn't going to let you have all the fun." Trevan then called on those officers to report to transporter room three for an away detail, then before heading out himself looked at Ben Soma, "Mister Soma, a moment please," (reply ALL of the above) (Posted by a still snot filled Kerry Fletcher) (USS Dennison - Primary Engineering - MCPO Freeman - 1902) Butch listened with a modicum of incredulity at the reply from the bridge. =^="Yes, we were tractored through some sort of interspatial rift. He only noted the change when he went to tap his commbadge to reply and found a fist instead of fingers. He rectified that quickly, took a deep breath, and tapped. "Aye aye sir. Until we find out exactly what caused the problem, there is no way to make things 'less disturbing'. If anyone has any relevant data that they could share, it would be appreciated Commander. Until then, we will sort through our limited data down here and keep you posted. Freeman out." (Reply West iyw, Any on Bridge, Science iyw, Any) He turned and glared at the small groups of engineers looking in his direction. "You heard the man. I want a complete analysis of engine logs, power consumption data, external sensors, internal sensors, you name it. Let's figure out exactly what happened... and then we can make sure it doesn't happen again. Move like you have a purpose people!" With that, he turned back to the Master situation monitor and started working backwards through the data from present back to prior to the 'event'. Somehow, this had to make sense. Engineering always did... even if it was someone else's engineering that caused the problem. Right? ~Interspatial rift? Hmm. Let's see how that affected our warp power systems, that's a start...~ If he could see what, if any effect there had been on the warp power systems, that might give him a clue about what exactly happened to the ship's power reserve. At least in theory. Freeman got back rapidly to work, wondering just how this was going to turn out. He began by calling upon the computer to reference any data on file regarding interspatial rifts and their interaction with starship power systems. The file popped up on the display and he began to digest it. (Reply Any) (Posted by Russ) (USS Dennison - Bridge - OPS - Ensign Cattia Spero - 1903) =/\=We will know you are ready. We will contact you then,=/\= replied the Maltorian. Kit found that disturbing, that these aliens would 'know' (by some unspecified means) when they were ready to send their away team down. However, she had no doubt that Captain Stakes was aware of the implications of that remark. Nor of their having no choice about being stuck here at the whim of a bunch of women-hating, xenophobic aliens. ~They must have a way of spying on us,~ she thought in disgust. ~This just gets better and better.~ West spoke to Chief Freeman in engineering and then the Captain asked him for his thoughts on the personnel to be in the away team. "I would like Spero, Soma, Sanok, Porter, Bracken as my second and Atwood. Also I would like Lt. Alosar to join." replied West, going on to explain his reasons. Kit's eyebrows shot up to hear West describe her as a 'language expert'. Her linguistic skills were no better than anyone else who wasn't a linguistics officer; she was a programmer who had written a program to make sense of the information they had, that was all. Before she could say anything, however, the Captain asked her a question. "Mister Spero, do you think you can teach me the basics of Maltorian language? Like saying hi all, how nice to be here?" But again she was forestalled, this time by West. "You don't actually think I am going to let you go down there sir, do you?" he asked. (reply Stakes) Trevan shook his head, "No sir. Not until we can establish a dialogue and guarantee your safety. You know that," he said with a sly smile, "I wasn't going to let you have all the fun." "Excuse me, Captain," Kit said. "To answer your question, Sir, I could write you a program that would enable you to learn from the language matrices we have. But I am no linguist, Sir, and thus would be unable to teach you myself. I have no personal knowledge of the Maltorian languages, I only read and interpret the results of the matrices the UT is using according to whether they make sense or not." She had been monitoring, or at least attempting to monitor the subspace realm that had entered, but difficulties in recalibrating the sensors to their mew surroundings, and so was no further to the mysteries that the rift had posed. "With no way out? Looks like we have no choice. But it saves us some difficult decisions. Ok, Mister West, away team. Who and why." She looked round as Stakes spoke, he’d been addressing West, but she was interested in who would form the team that would, essentially, be performing a first contact mission. "I would like Spero, Soma, Sanok, Porter, Bracken as my second and Atwood. Also I would like Lt. Alosar to join." Dale was genuinely surprised to be included in the away team, She had become aware of concerns that some had about including females in a team to a planet inhabited by a populace that showed, amongst other things, outward chauvinism. She hit the key combination that would lock her out of the terminal, and began to make her way toward the transporter room, grabbing a Sciences away kit on the way. "Commander I won't pretend to like the situation we are in, we've been dragged here for reasons unknown to us. I would prefer that this mission be peaceful but I must also be prepared for the possibility of hostile activity. Had you said that the away team was to be unarmed I would have objected, I'm no good to you if I don't consider the safety of the people in the away team." Ben felt reassured by Commander West's tone and the reassuring hand on his shoulder, this was his first away mission and his first contact with an alien species and Ben didn't want to make any mistakes that would threaten the mission. He regarded Commander West and said, " Yes, Sir." Ben then turned back to his console and hit the necessary controls that would lock him out of the tactical station so another officer could log in and assume the station in his absence. (reply any on the bridge) (posted by Milo Young) (USS Dennison, Transporter Room, Ensign jg Sanok, 1908) Sanok had been in the main security office, monitoring things that were happening on the bridge. Receiving a call to report for the first contact away mission, he nodded to another officer to take his position. Grabbing a cricket phaser, as he was instructed to take, he went to the transporter room. Being the first to arrive, he waited patiently for the rest of the team. (Reply Any) (Posted by Bob) (USS Dennison Bridge TAC/SC Lt (sg) Joan Shrekt 1909) Shrekt watched with interest as the away team was selected. Much as she might want to go down herself, she knew it wiser not to disrupt the Maltorian sensibilities by including her in the away team. Much to her surprise, Lieutenant Bracken and Ensign Spero were included in the away team. But she assumed with the majority of the away team being male, it might not be so bad. She was mildly disturbed by the manner in which the ship had been brought to Maltorian space and now she wondered if it was even possible for the ship to leave of its own accord. She would be most displeased to find themselves trapped in Maltorian space and forced to do their bidding, whatever that might be. Her eyes followed Commander West, as he had a quick conversation with Ensign Soma. When he was finished, Shrekt cleared her throat to get the commander’s attention. “Commander West, since we are committing such resources to the away team, might I suggest taking on at least two additional security officers. I am certain they can adhere to whatever restrictions might be placed on them, due to the highly sensitive nature of this mission.” stated Shrekt. (reply West) “Thank you Commander.” replied Shrekt, as she inputted criteria into the system to select two of the most qualified security personnel for a mission of this nature. She read over the suggested profiles and selected the desired number and sent them each notification to go to Transporter Room Three, armed as the Commander had indicated. (Reply West, Any) (posted by Kaweo Kanoho) (USS Dennison- Bridge- ATac Ensign (jg) Ben Soma- 1910) Ben was about to leave the bridge when Lt. Shrekt said, “Commander West, since we are committing such resources to the away team, might I suggest taking on at least two additional security officers. I am certain they can adhere to whatever restrictions might be placed on them, due to the highly sensitive nature of this mission.” Ben thought that was a very reasonable request, a couple extra security officers may come in handy if the situation turned bad. Extra personnel would add to the security of the away team and ease some of the pressure on himself and Ensign Sanok. Ben was glad of the extra help, it was good to be prepared for any situation and he now felt better if something would happen to cause a fire fight. Four armed members was better than two, but Ben still hoped that the away team would not have to resort to shooting their way out of the Presidential Office. Ben stepped into the turbo lift and sent it on its way. (USS Dennison - Bridge - Counselor- Lt. Alosar 1911) Alosar did not immediately leave the bridge when he heard his name mentioned. There were several reasons for this. The first, and most likely foremost, was that he would rush down to the transporter room only to wait for the man that had asked for him, who was standing in the same room. Secondly, it only made sense that they would ride the turbolift together, as it would give West a chance to give any last minute directions, what ever they might be. It was only logical to have the ships counselor on a first contact mission, as they were, in some ways, trained to deal with these situations. Alosar, in particular, could give a more dispassionate point of view on the situation with the Maltorians. However, as both the captain and West just demonstrated, logical decisions offered were not always the ones taken. It was just part of dealing with the human equation. It wasn't the first time that he marveled at the fact that humans had not destroyed themselves before this time. His sharp Vulcan ears picked up the conversation between West and Soma. He had a vested interest in the young Ensign, as he had spent most of the previous day with him. Although he was curious why he chose Soma to be one to carry a concealed weapon, as he had not proven to have the maturity to handle such a responsibility, he agreed in the precaution. It was doubtful that West got to where he was by being foolish, so he decided not to comment. The suggestion from Shrekt to take additional security was another sensible suggestion, though Alosar was beginning to worry about the size of the landing party. Alosar began to wonder if he should arm himself, but hopefully is other skills would prove more valuable. "Commander," Alosar said to West, "we should probably get going. Our hosts will be waiting." (reply West) (posted by Al Muir) (USS Dennison, Transporter Room 3, Ensign jg Sanok, 1911) The doors opened and Ensign Soma entered. He nodded to Sanok, and Sanok returned the nod. "Here's to hoping for a peaceful meeting," said Soma. "We will be joined by two extra security officers. I don't know about you, but I'll feel better with the added security for the duration of the meeting." Sanok thought about this. The team was large enough already. Did they really need two more security personnel? They would be on the Maltorian home world, after all, so why bring two more? "Indeed," said Sanok. Soma stood alongside Sanok, and joined him in waiting for the rest of the team. (Reply Any) (Posted by Bob) (USS Dennison- Bridge- Commander Trevan West, CSO/2O Lt j.g. Dale Bracken- 1912) Trevan was just finished with Ben Soma, when he saw Dale entering the turbolift. "Commander," Alosar said to West, "we should probably get going. Our hosts will be waiting." Trevan nodded at him and gestured to Dale to hold the lift for them. "Thanks," he said as she nodded slightly as he turned to her. The door to the lift closed and they were inside, "Transporter room Three," Trevan said to the computer and instantly they were moving. The lights on the side of the lift were the only indication they were moving, the lift betrayed no sense of movement. Trevan looked over at Dale, "Problems?" he asked her. She shook her head, “Not as such, more...uncertainty. Up until now our missions have been driven by war, by immediate necessity, this one is driven by rebuilding, by expansion. Effectively it’s a First Contact.” Trevan nodded, "Without contact for almost two hundred years, yes, it's effectively a First Contact situation. Looks like all those classes in Inter-species relations will finally come in handy," he said. Dale smiled slightly. “Culturally this is going to be no small shock. I’ve heard of some of the recommendations, Male only away team. Guess I’m going to have to get used to being a second class citizen for a while.” The remark was flippant, a half attempt at humour to cover the nervousness, Dale was is no doubt that West noticed. Trevan smiled, "Well, they may feel that way about you, but we don't. Unless," he said and looked at her with raised eyebrows, "you want us to start?" Dale laughed slightly, “No...Thank you. You know, you always have a certain way to improve my mood.” "That's my job," he said, "your job is to make sure I don't make a complete ass of myself. Work with Alosar, you and he seem to have a firm grasp on their culture so I am happy knowing my two best people are on the case." said Trevan. Leaning against the wall of the lift, Trevan crossed his arms in a more casual way and explained that he really expected her to be forthright, speak her mind, and not to worry about their cultures' view on women, "If you show to them, what you show to the rest of us, they will respect you. Simple," he said as the lift stopped for a moment before it started a horizontal movement towards their final destination. "Anything else, professionally?" he asked. The lift began to draw to a stop. “No Sir, I don’t think so. Let’s get this started.” The doors to the lift opened and the three of them walked out into the corridor and headed towards the transporter room. Alosar went in but Trevan held Dale up for a moment before she went in herself, "Dale, just be yourself. Do what you are good at and they will have to respect you. They have probably never seen a woman with the skills that you have, it may show them that women are able to do any job." Dale felt herself flush slightly. “You’re too kind. You know Sir, We’ve been in how many war zones and what else, but I'm more wary now than I ever have been.” The doors slid open to reveal the Transporter room. He could see Alosar standing next to Ben Soma, Sanok, and two other security officers, "Hmm, it looks like Mister Atwood and Mister Porter are not here. We will give them a few minutes to arrive. However," he said looking at the security officers, "I think we have one too many security officers for this mission," said West and talked to Crewman Mitchell and asked him to remain behind. "Ok, is everyone prepared? Tricorders and the like?" he asked to the room. (reply All) "Questions, comments?" he said. She withstood her father's gaze until he nodded. "I forgot. You did some translation courses. Good." Archibald nodded and shifted his view towards the OPS-officer when Esme cleared her throat again. When he made eye contact with her she shot him a pleading look and nodded her head towards the door to the turbo lift. She knew that if she asked him outright, he would say no. She saw her father's eyes narrow and looked from Cattia to her. She could imagine the thought processes going on his mind and she just waited for his mouth to open and say or mouth: "No." But instead he shifted his view to the Commander. "Mister West, slight change of plan. My yeoman will join you instead of Ensign Spero. The Ensign can work with the Engineering department on how to reduce the impact of the rift travel has on our ship. And the Yeoman has been trained at the Academy regarding basic translations." His gaze shifted towards her for a second, carrying a warning in them, until he looked towards the front of the Bridge. With that Ben took up position beside Ensign Sanok and waited for the others to arrive. (reply Sanok/ any) (posted by Milo Young) (USS Dennison- Bridge- Commander Trevan West, 1915) With a slight change in plans, the away team was ready to go. All of them, including their replacement officer of Yeoman Stakes were standing on the transporter platform, "Chief," said West to the Transporter Officer, "open a channel to the First Minister's office please." With a nod, the crewman opened the channel, "First Minister, this is Commander West on the Dennison standing by to receive beam down co-ordinates and the lowering of your security field." "The co-ordinates are now being sent. There will be a thirty second count from the time you receive them, to sync your beam in." The Transporter Chief signaled to Trevan the co-ordinates had been received and fed into the Transporter, the thirty second count began. With three seconds to go the transporter began its dematerialization of the away team. At zero seconds they had vanished into the pattern buffer, sent hundreds of kilometers through space and rematerialized on Maltoria. Once the transporter beam had ceased, Trevan was immediately on guard seeing that his surroundings were not that of the Presidents office but that of a Maltorian city with it's tall spire reaching up into the sky. Looking around he could see that there were not any local Maltorians around them, but how long that would last was an unknown. Tapping his communicator Trevan tried to hail the Dennison, "West to Dennison," he said but there was no reply, "West to Dennison come in please," again there was no reply from the ship. "West to Bracken," he said knowing she was right beside him. "Well at least short range communications work," he said. (reply ALL) (Posted by Kerry Fletcher) (USS Dennison- Bridge- CSO/2O Dale Bracken, 1916) Dale had been checking and double checking her sciences away kit, listening to the interchanges around her as she did so. She pulled herself to full attention as the chief hit the command that initiated transfer. Once the transporter beam had ceased, Dale was immediately fully aware of what was around her, or more correctly what was and what shouldn’t be. The city, or what Dale could immediately see of it, seemed architecturally quite attractive, a tall spire and buildings with sweeping buttresses dominated the small, though currently empty marketplace. She could see slightly down some small alleys, promising more, though somewhat larger buildings. “I’m not certain about what you expected Commander, but personally I’d have thought that there’d be less market stalls in the President’s office?” (reply West) She nodded, then motioned to the security officers, “Soma, Sanok, scan the area, secure it as much as possible. Let me know if we’re going to get any company. Doc, help them out, scan for lifesigns” (Reply Soma/Sanok/Porter) West tapped his communicator Trevan tried to hail the Dennison, "West to Dennison," he said but there was no reply, "West to Dennison come in please," again there was no reply from the ship. "West to Bracken,” Dale heard the Commander’s voice both from himself and the communicator, she shrugged, and nodded, “Well at least short range communications work," “Agreed Sir,” Dale had removed a tricorder from her kit, “attempting to locate position, I think it’s clear that something has happened and we’re nowhere near the President’s Office. Question is, was our information incorrect, or was the transfer pattern disrupted in some way?” (reply West) (Posted by Mark) (USS Dennison- Transporter Room 3- ATac Ensign (jg) Ben Soma- 1916) The doors slid open as the two extra security personnel entered and took up position inside the room, Ben nodded to them and they returned the gesture. A few moments later Lt. Alosar entered the room and came over by Ben and Sanok, Ben nodded to him as well. He had sent a fair amount of time with the Lt. during the previous day and was glad that Alosar was included in the away team, Vulcan's by nature were impartial and never gave into emotional outbursts, Ben felt that Lt. Alosar would bring extra stability to the mission. Ben considered Alosar as an emotional anchor, someone who would help to keep the tension level in check. Alosar had helped Ben find a few answers that he had been seeking ever since his parents disappeared, he was grateful for the assistance and felt comfortable around the Lt. Vulcan's were a very disciplined race and as a martial artist Ben also had to maintain a high level of discipline through most of his life, and for that reason Ben felt close to Lt. Alosar. The doors slid open again admitting Commander West and Lt. Bracken, "Hmm, it looks like Mister Atwood and Mister Porter are not here. We will give them a few minutes to arrive. However," he said looking at the security officers, "I think we have one too many security officers for this mission," said West and talked to Crewman Mitchell and asked him to remain behind. Ben considered that request for a moment and decided that the away team was a little big, so the presence of four security officers was probably unnecessary, it was after all a peaceful mission and an away team consisting of so many security officers would relay a message of mistrust. "Ok, is everyone prepared? Tricorders and the like?" Commander West asked to the room. Ben looked to Commander West and said, " All ready, Sir." (reply any in transporter room 3) "Questions, comments?" Commander West said. Ben had no questions at the time so he waited to see what concerns the remainder of the party had.
